1644 – Confused Pilgrims in Boston report America’s first UFO sighting
1733 – 1st polar bear goes on exhibit in America (Boston)
1778 – Capt James Cook stumbles upon the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii)
1788 – The first elements of the First Fleet carrying 736 convicts from England to Australia arrives at Botany Bay to set up a penal colony
1911 – The first landing of a plane on board a ship takes place (Tanforan Park on the USS Pennsylvania)
1912 – English explorer Robert F Scott & his expedition reach the South Pole, only to discover that Ronald Amundsen had gotten there before him

1996 – Major League Baseball owners unanimously approve inter-league play in 1997
