1788 – The first US steamboat patent is issued, by Georgia to Briggs & Longstreet
1790 – The United States Supreme Court convenes for the 1st time (NYC)
1861 – Texas becomes the 7th state to secede from the United States
1871 – Jefferson Long of Georgia is the first black man to make an official speech in House of Representatives (opposing leniency to former Confederates)
