1778 – France recognizes the United States and signs treaty of aid in Paris; England declares war on France
1819 – Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles founds free-port harbor Singapore

1869 – Harper’s Weekly publishes its first picture of Uncle Sam with chin whiskers
