1407 – the lama Deshin Shekpa visits the Ming Dynasty capital at Nanjing. He is awarded with the title Great Treasure Prince of Dharma
1710 – The first law regulating copyright is issued in Great Britain
1790 – Robert Gray becomes the first American to circumnavigate the Earth
1790 – The US Patent system forms
1825 – The first hotel in Hawaii opens its doors
1849 – The Safety pin is patented by Walter Hunt (NYC); he sells the rights for $400
1858 – The original Big Ben, a 14.5 tonne bell for the Tower of London is cast in Stockton-on-Tees by Warner’s of Cripplegate. This however cracked during testing and was recast into the 13.76 tonne bell by Whitechapel Bell Foundry and is still in use to this date
1866 – American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) forms
1912 – RMS Titanic sets sail for its 1st & last voyage
1925 – Scribners publishes “The Great Gatsby” by F Scott Fitzgerald
1947 – Jackie Robinson becomes the first black player in major league baseball (Dodgers)
1955 – Dr Jonas Salk successfully tests Polio vaccine
1974 – Magicians Penn & Teller 1st meet
1981 – Imprisoned IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands is elected to British Parliament
1989 – H J Heinz, Van Camp Seafood & Bumble Bee Seafood say they would not buy tuna caught in nets that also trap dolphins (but they do)
2006 – Hundreds of thousands protest H.R. 4437 (aka the “Sensenbrenner Bill”) in the United States
2012 – Apple Inc claims a value of $600 billion making it the largest company by market capitalization in the world
