1148 – Louis VII of France lays siege to Damascus (Syria) during the Second Crusade
1487 – Citizens of Leeuwarden, Netherlands rebel against a ban on foreign beer
1683 – The 1st settlers from Germany to the US, leave aboard Concord
1832 – Benjamin Bonneville leads the first wagon train across the Rocky Mountains by using Wyoming’s South Pass
1847 – Brigham Young & his Mormon followers arrive at Salt Lake City, Utah
1877 – Federal troops are used to combat strikers for the first time
1911 – Hiram Bingham discovers the Lost City of the Incas
1925 – John Thomas Scopes is found guilty of teaching evolution in a Tennessee HS, and is fined $100 & costs (later overturned)
1938 – Instant coffee is invented
1958 – Ted Williams is fined $250 for spitting at Boston fans, again
1961 – Beginning of a trend; a US commercial plane is hijacked to Cuba

2002 – James Traficant is expelled from the United States House of Representatives on a vote of 420 to 1
