539 BC – King Cyrus The Great of Persia marches into the city of Babylon, releasing the Jews from almost 70 years of exile and making the first Human Rights Declaration
1483 – Tomas de Torquemada is appointed inquisitor-general of Spain
1814 – A huge vat containing over 135,000 imperial gallons (610,000 L) of beer ruptures, causing other vats in the same building to succumb and cause the great London Beer Flood killing nine
1855 – The Bessemer steelmaking process is patented
1885 – Baseball sets all players salaries at $1,000-$2,000 for the 1885 season
1888 – Thomas Edison files a patent for the Optical Phonograph (the first movie)
