1646 – Massachusetts uses the death penalty for denying that the Holy Bible is God’s word

1841 – 1st wagon train arrives in California

 

1846 – Benjamin Palmer patents the artificial leg

1862 – Dr Richard Gatling patents the Gatling machine gun

1873 – Dentist John Beers of SF patents the gold crown

1879 – James Ritty patents the first cash register, to combat stealing by bartenders in his Dayton, Ohio saloon

1914 – Vogue magazine holds its 1st model show (“Fashion Fete,” NYC)

1924 – California legalizes professional boxing (illegal since 1914)

1939 – US allows “cash & carry” arms sales during WW II

1948 – TS Eliot wins Nobel Prize for literature

1953 – New balk rule gives the batter option; of accepting the outcome of the pitch or the balk

1955 – The rebuilt Vienna State Opera reopens with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fidelio after it was totally destroyed in World War II
